So, one day in December 1999, I was sitting around sketching monsters, which is what I always used to do, whenever I was bored, back when I was young and single and had free time (Haha).
(Using these maroon-red colored pencils, that a lot of us at Sony Animation drew with back then, in the pre-digital days, when we were still doing storyboards on paper).
On that fateful afternoon, I recall sketching a few Zombies, a Skeleton chopping someone’s head off, a Chud monster (from the movie C.H.U.D.), and then, giving it no more thought than any of the others, a Female Vampire.
The movie SPIDERBABY was heavily on my mind. So, just for fun, I tried to work some of that Jill Banner energy into this Female Vampire. With the beaming eyes and creepy hand gestures. I gave her a traditional Female Vampire look, while also putting some unique features in there, like those odd markings under her eyes.
For some reason, this sketch struck me as something special. I could put the other monster sketches away but found myself wanting to make more drawings of this particular Female Vampire.
…Maybe even a whole comic book about her...
Just one problem - I didn’t have any story ideas for a Female Vampire.
And then, a lightning bolt struck my brain: What if I teamed her up with my unnamed Werewolf character that I’ve always wanted to draw comics about?
That was the accidental start of what became a creative obsession for the next 20+ years.
